Go Raw

Here's one of my raw food smoothies made
with my new super bullet that Sir Henry
got me for Christmas--there's kale in there :)

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout--Workout # 7

Eat one whole, raw food. We have all heard that eating less processed food is better for us. Start today and eat one thing that is not processed in any way.

Bonus: Try a raw food smoothie at the store or homemade

Enhancements:

·         Try one piece of fruit, four baby carrots, or a single slice of tomato.

·         Eat your one thing completely by itself—no salt, no dressing, nothing but one whole food.

·         Visualize your body saying thank you.

Make something of it

Slipper Camp Workout #6:

Make something. The feeling of accomplishment when you make something yourself is a boost to the soul and the mind.

Bonus: Make something that makes you laugh.

Tips and Enhancements:

·         Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be “creative” to make something.

·         If you cook from box items, try making something from scratch.

·         If you only buy pre-made items, cook something from a box.

·         Write a handwritten thank you note or birthday wish.

·         If you have a hobby, make something with it—from knitting a scarf, to making a gift tag or card, to planting a seed or placing a carrot top in water.

·         Make a photo log of today by snapping shots all day lo

Obviously this is one of my favorite topics. For more tips and enhancements visit the Artful Tourist side of my website: http://www.nachattin.com/indexartonly.html

Sticky Rolls--AKA FLASH! Monkey Bread

My favorite recipe books are the ones lovingly compiled as fundraisers for churches and community groups. They include recipes for all kinds of dishes that are usually family friendly, easy, and frugal. I have a collection that includes my own books plus those from my mother’s and grandmother’s collections. Just browsing through the books takes me back to the covered dish suppers, family reunions, and holidays of my youth

I went to one of these books back around 1995 when we were having guests for the weekend and I needed something to serve for breakfast. I found a recipe that was submitted by one of my cousins on the Richardson side for breakfast cinnamon buns. It looked like a modified version of Monkey Bread which I had eaten before but never made because monkey bread involved the time consuming chore of rolling small pieces of dough in a sugar cinnamon mixture.

This recipe call for breaking the dough into small pieces, but then the topping could just be poured on top of the dough

Over the years I’ve stopped looking at the recipe and I just add the ingredients to fit the number of biscuits in the can. The part that never changes is how making these makes me think about my family, the novelty that biscuits come in a can, and my favorite kind of cookbook.

The view before baking

The Recipe in “you get the idea” format:
  • Use non-stick spray to coat bottom and sides of casserole dish
  • Pull apart 10 canned biscuits and place pieces in dish
  • Melt a stick of butter in a 2 cup glass measuring cup
  • Add about a cup of brown sugar, a tablespoon of pancake syrup, teaspoon of vanilla and a teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Stir topping and pour over the biscuits.
  • Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown—around 15 minutes.
I don’t eat sweets in the morning anymore so we have this for dessert now served warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
“Y’all help yourself now.” (that means bon appetite in southern English)

Food Glorious Food

Food Glorious Food--from the Broadway show and movie musical Oliver happens to be the first Broadway show tune I remember knowing. My Mom had the LP and I played and sang the whole soundtrack over and over...but the "food song" stuck with me. And the line that cues that song? "Please sir, may I have some more?" Yes, this is why they call it trivia.
I've been working on visual tribute to food for almost two years now. There's not much to show for it except pages of notes, interviews, recipes, lists, menus, and sketches. My working title is "Food is Love, Love is Food" but as of today, I may go back to the Oliver song....
The layout above was created for the fine folks at Spellbinders, but since the dies aren't that prominent, I don't know where it will end up. (If you notice it missing later on, it's because I'm holding it for publication....)
The left side reads: Food Wisdom: Why dip when you can swim? The dies are Symbology, Paisley, and Paisley mystery die. The stamp is Tim Holtz paisley. The "mess" around the corner is pearlized glue stick squirted randomly. Ranger white Dabber, Sakura Glaze pens, Ancient Page and Colorbox Chalk inks provide the coloring. The background paper is gorgeous in person, it's World Win Caribbean Colors white so it's textured. The print paper is from a pack I got at Jo Ann's with some chipboard. It says "made in china" but it looks a bit like a rip off of Rouge papers--maybe they sold it to them?
The right side reads: Laundry Wisdom: Why Worry? I used the same coloring tools, paper for journaling, and background white card stock. The print background is Junkitz (I think). The journaling area talks about how cool it is to have a neighbor that dives right in and then talks about the significance of dips and chip in my world. Yes, I wrote significance...but hey, we go way back.
