Labels and Signs

This is a great eyeliner, however,
I haven't noticed my "sexy" boosted.
My sexiness hasn't increased either.
My husband and I have enjoyed spotting and interpreting signs and labels over the last 15 years. Funny, I never thought of it as "a thing" for us until I started writing this post. Cool, something else we enjoy doing together.

Eyeliner is fabulous. I've been wearing it since I sold Mary Kay back in 1982. Back then, the liquid eyeliner fad of the '60s had disappeared and the most common eyeliner wearing people were punk rockers and heavy metal bands. David Bowie and Boy George were also fans of eyeliner--do they fit in those groups?

So, the smart folks at Mary Kay taught their Beauty Consultants and thereby their customers to use a tiny bit of liquid eyeliner at the very base of the lashes to add fullness. This little tip really does make lashes look fuller and it helped sell liquid eyeliner during the dry spell.

Today liquid eyeliner is popular again. I love the cool dramatic looks I see on women.

Sadly, my 55-year old eyes do not not look good, much less sexy, with dramatic eyeliner. It only emphasizes the crepe skin and droopy lids.

Even if I weren't in Slipper Camp this year, the eyeliner issue would not be worrying me in any way. Slipper Camp is just an added boost to my self-confidence and appreciation of my own beauty.

The Slipper Camp philosophy of living fully in each moment has heightened my awareness of signs and labels. So "sexy booster" eyeliner is amusing partly because of it's grammatical snafu and partly because I've never had my sexy boosted. Should I get a refund?

My return to camp

I finished my first 2017 Slipper Camp Workout:
"Printing out at least three great photos from 2017 and putting them in prominent places."

In February 2016 I attended what we call "Art Camp" again.
This photo is from a walk with my dearest friends Lynn & Jill.
I digitally created a fun photo keepsake for them in Oct. 2016.
Now the photo is on the magnet board above my monitor.
This Polaroid of Owen was already up. (Bonus for me--smile.) Interesting to note: Owen goes directly to that photo and makes a comment every time he comes in our house.

Owen is my grandson by way of my God-daughter Brittany.

October 2016-- weekend in a cabin with my friend Nanette.
We hadn't seen each other in over 7 years.
Thanks to Slipper Camp exercise one I see this photo every day.
My dresser top looks like inspiration for another exercise, right?

I had my first birthday party in several years in 2016. The photo now happily resides on our fridge door.

Returning to Slipper Camp

Happy new year and welcome back campers!

Slipper camp is designed to be a kinder, gentler version of boot camp. We explore stretching our limits on the physical, mental, and spiritual levels with mini-workouts throughout 2017. We will repeat some of our exercises from our last camp sessions in 2014 along with adding plenty of new ones.

Exercise 1: Gratitude for the dances

Introduction: Everyone over the age of two can tell you something they remember. Sadly, when asked, adults will often recall or share their worst memories.

I have seen so many posts on Facebook that say "2016 was a tough year."

Did nothing make you smile in 2016? Nothing?

Workout: Find three (or more) "smile worthy" photos on your phone and PRINT them. Put those photos in very visible places. Tape to fridge, staple inside your planner, pin to a bulletin board--you get the idea. Be grateful for the dances.

Tips:
1. Most stores offer an app that will allow you to print photos directly from your phone.
Here's one from Walgreens: http://photo.walgreens.com/walgreens/storepage/storePageId=Mobile
2. Any photos you transfer to your computer can be printed in several ways:

-- Send them to a store (drugstores to discount stores) or have them mailed to you
-- Send them to the same type store and pick them up the same or next day
-- Move photos to a USB drive and take it into a store
-- Use an online photo printing service, for example: www.snapfish.com (there are a ton of these)
3. You can print directly from Facebook with many online services now
4. If you own a printer: (black and white is fine)
--Print directly from a smart phone and wireless printer
--Print from your PC with these easy steps

    -left click photo
    -click open in new window
-enter control P on new window

This is easy. You know you'll love it.

Bowl of Cherries--Slipper Camp Style

Today's Topic: Life is just a bowl of cherries
In the process of wondering where the expression "Life is just a bowl of cherries" came from I created a recent blog post featuring the video and song lyrics.
Bowl of cherries from our kitchen.

Here's my favorite quote from the song:

"The best things in life to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you never owned

Life is just a bowl of cherries
So live and laugh at it all"

Slipper Camp Activities:

1.     Well yeah, eat a bowl of cherries

2.     Eat fresh fruit every day for a week

3.     Get a cherry/olive pitter and make life easier (Tell your local Pampered Chef rep that I sent you—wink)

4.     Fill your blender with cherries, almond milk, and vanilla protein powder for a cherry vanilla shake

5.   Journal Prompt: Create a cherry and the pits post

Protect and Retain

 Today’s Slipper Camp Workout #12

Practice Self-Protection and Retention

Memorize the appearance of one stranger and describe them later in the day so that someone else would recognize them. Consider height, weight, hair, skin, clothing, and age. Practice using your pepper spray for maximum effectiveness.

http://www.mydamselpro.net/LIVESAFELIVEWELL/
The hardcore pepper spray from
Damsel in Defense--$10.00 can
get you a long way from trouble.

Tip: (Thanks to Michelle Guercio at a recent Damsel in Defense event) On the way out of many fast-food restaurants and other stores there is a height chart to increase the ability of judging height for a “Creeper.” Find the chart in a place you frequent and use it for your workout.

Even if you have to use the pepper spray, do what
you can to remember what the creeper looks like.

Gratitude Practice

Walking outside in Florida mean "critters." I appreciated
this snail one day--especially the fact that he was
on our mail box. SNAIL MAIL ROCKS.
Today’s Slipper Camp Workout #11

Gratitude Workout:

Go outside, look around and be thankful for one thing you normally take for granted in nature. Marvel at the beauty of one plant that provides oxygen to the world, at the sky overhead whether sunny or cloudy and how changes in climate create the cycles of nature. Appreciate one bare tree that means you can see the beautiful shape of branches without distraction. Remind yourself that being thankful lifts your spirit.

Bonus challenge: Try this every time you step outside for one week or longer.

Watch Where You're Going

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout--Workout 8

While you watch where you're going, hold your stun
device and your alarm or pepper spray in your hand.

Every time you exit a door to the outside—pay attention.

·         Look around you and note if there are other people lurking or on their way somewhere as well. Look around your car before you unlock the door.

·         Don’t remote unlock until you are within opening distance of the door.

·         Remember where you parked.

·         Note the proximity of any windowless vans.

·         Look people in the face and nod or smile. Review how you would describe them to someone else.

Go Raw

Here's one of my raw food smoothies made
with my new super bullet that Sir Henry
got me for Christmas--there's kale in there :)

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout--Workout # 7

Eat one whole, raw food. We have all heard that eating less processed food is better for us. Start today and eat one thing that is not processed in any way.

Bonus: Try a raw food smoothie at the store or homemade

Enhancements:

·         Try one piece of fruit, four baby carrots, or a single slice of tomato.

·         Eat your one thing completely by itself—no salt, no dressing, nothing but one whole food.

·         Visualize your body saying thank you.

Make something of it

Slipper Camp Workout #6:

Make something. The feeling of accomplishment when you make something yourself is a boost to the soul and the mind.

Bonus: Make something that makes you laugh.
Silly Kissy Birds ACEO by Norma
Anne Chattin 2014 copyright

Tips and Enhancements:

·         Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be “creative” to make something.

·         If you cook from box items, try making something from scratch.

·         If you only buy pre-made items, cook something from a box.

·         Write a handwritten thank you note or birthday wish.

·         If you have a hobby, make something with it—from knitting a scarf, to making a gift tag or card, to planting a seed or placing a carrot top in water.

·         Make a photo log of today by snapping shots all day lo

Slipper Camp--Exercise 5 Attentiveness

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout: Reverse Order
Take one activity you do every single day and reverse the order. If you normally put on your left shoe first, then start with the right. If you normally brush your teeth right to left—go left to right. Changing up a small habit will help you concentrate on exactly what you are doing in that moment and increase your attentiveness.

Slipper Camp Exercise 4 Core Value Review

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout: Review Your Core Values

Remember those core values we established in week one? http://www.artfultourist.blogspot.com/2014/01/slipper-camp-exercise-one.html

Do you keep a to-do list? Write those core values at the top of your to-do list every time you make one. Make choices on your list based on your core values.

Tips/Enhancements:

·         Finding your to-do list is longer than your day? Mark or circle the three items you must do today and work those as a priority.
·         Be careful of doing the easiest things and putting off the most important.
·         Love checking things off your list? Try marking items that you have partially finished with a special symbol or letter so you can see that you’ve addressed that item in some way.

Fresh Breath--Slipper Camp Work Out Three

Today’s Slipper Camp Workout: Fresh Breath

Are you ready to pass the fresh breath test? Feeling confident about your breath is a great confidence booster. Taking care of your teeth and gums also makes you healthier and stronger. Spend some time and thought into having fresh breath for the next few days.

Enhancements:
·         Floss! The most common cause of bad breath is not as much the food you eat as it is how long that food stays in your mouth. Using floss to remove food debris will keep your breath fresher and longer.
·         Rinse and spit. Flossing isn’t always possible. When it’s not convenient, rinse your mouth with water and spit.
·         My recent “learn something new” was that you should floss before you brush. I’m not sure where I got the idea that the reverse order was better, but now I know the facts. J

·         Gum and mints are not good for your teeth. If you need a fresh breath boost try those dissolving strips or sprays.

and a good teeth whitening too :) NAC
